Week 3
This Week in TAXtalk
Dear Subscriber,
Do you know about TAXtalk´s PROFESSIONAL PROFILING?

This is a new concept that I have introduced to the TAXtalk magazine. I was sitting and thinking about how, when in conversation, people mention names of well known business people and the conversation normally goes something like this:
“So did you read that article on Maria Ramos in yesterday’s paper?”

“Yes, she made some interesting comments on the industry.”

“Yes, but Cyril Ramaphosa also had some interesting points to make, did you see what they quoted him as saying?”

When you mention these well known business figures people don´t look around and whisper; “who is he talking about?” They just know.

How many of us actually know who our business gurus’ are in the tax industry? How many of us will know who is being spoken about when you mention the corporate faces of tax? Besides Pravin Gordhan and Trevor Manuel do you really know who the experts in this industry are? I think not.

That is why TAXtalk has decided to do what I call Professional Profiling of the tax experts in the industry. No, I am not going to give you their CV´s and tell you how qualified they are, we already know that. We are going to introduce to you the faces of the corporate tax industry. In every Issue we will be introducing you to a new expert and professional tax specialist. We will interview the professional on their area of expertise and in a two page spread they will give you their expert opinion and comments on the topic being discussed.

In Issue 6 of TAXtalk,we started off with the introduction of Daniel Erasmus of DE Professional Consultants, an expert tax attorney known for his specialised knowledge of Constitutional Law and how it applies to tax. In his interview he discussed the seven habitual tax mistakes that businesses make and the tax risks that they take. TAXtalk will be publishing the solutions to these seven mistakes over the next two issues. In our upcoming Issue 7 of TAXtalk, we will be profiling Pierre Du Toit a director of KPMG and interviewing him on morality, patriotism and prosperity for all. Pierre will chat to us about the highly dynamic tax environment and give us his views on the South African tax landscape.

These are our faces of the tax world. TAXtalk will be bringing all of them to you. If you are a face of the corporate tax world and you are not known, let us tell the industry about you. I would like to profile you. Contact me for an appointment on Janine@taxtalk.co.za - I will come and meet with you so we can chat.

Until recently the commissioner of SARS was generally only permitted to enter into a settlement agreement if there was a formal dispute between SARS and a taxpayer. The only way a “dispute” could arise was if the taxpayer lodged a valid objection with SARS. This requirement created a gap in legislation and often frustrated settlement negotiations between SARS and taxpayers.

I would imagine that if you are reading this Angle, you are unlikely to find yourself in a debt crisis as you are most likely a financial advisor, a relatively wealthy client or possibly even an asset manager. Unfortunately, however, your financial well-being is unlikely to be replicated by your domestic worker/s and this Angle is all about them and the new South African National Credit Act.
