This Week in TAXtalk
Dear Subscriber,
Compliments of the season to you and your family!!!!
In retrospect of 2007, the words of Paul J Meyer ring in my ears “When you motivate yourself for
leadership, you have neither the time nor the capacity to be afraid.” TAXtalk has grown in leaps
and bounds in the last year, and we plan to grow even more so that you may receive the most benefit
out of the magazine in the future.
This will be the last newsletter for 2007 as I will personally be on leave from next week. I am
gratefully looking forward to a nice break and some quality time with my family and friends.
As an early new year´s resolution, I will be taking the advice of Paul J Meyer who tells us not to
waste time with regrets for all the goals you failed to set in the yesterdays that are past, if
there´s anything you want to do, the only limitations there will ever be are the ones you place
in your own mind, people can change their way of life only when they change their way of
thinking.

Landmark ruling on companies tax
Sanchia Tenkin - Business Day - Personal Finance
In a landmark judgment the Supreme Court of Appeal has allowed an appeal by the South African Revenue
Service (SARS) on secondary tax on companies. The appeal court held earlier this week that it was
sufficient, to render a close corporation or company liable for secondary tax, if a shareholder or
relative was named as a beneficiary in the trust, regardless of whether he or she had a vested right
to claim a benefit from the trust.

Tax havens mostly just pipe dreams
Adele Shevel - Business Day - Personal Finance
South Africans using Offshore Financial Centres still face exchange controls. The notion of tax havens
has tended to conjure up images of small, far-flung islands with large sums of money flowing
through.
